From the Greek telos, meaning “purpose,” the view that everything has an end, goal,function, or purpose. The explanation of phenomena in terms of their overall purpose—for example, animals have certain traits because they help them survive. While mechanistic explanations are now generally preferred, teleology remains important in explaining social(that is, intentional) activity. In virtue ethics, the good life is intimately connected with fulfilling one’s purpose.
