René Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician, and writer.Descartes is often called the Father of Modern Philosophy, and much ofearly Western philosophy is a response to his writings. Descartes writingare still studied closely to this day.
Descartes was also influential in mathematics; the Cartesian coordinatesystem – allowing reference to a point in space as a set of numbers, andallowing algebraic equations to be expressed as geometric shapes in atwo-dimensional coordinate system (and conversely, shapes to be describedas equations) – was named after him.
Descartes was also one of the key figures in the Scientific Revolution andhas been described as an example of genius.
