Mimesis

In aesthetics, the modeling or representation of an object by a work of art. The mimetic theory of art dominated aesthetics from Plato and Aristotle, but was eventually challenged by the increased importance attached to the artist’s intentions (rather than the artwork itself) and,further, by contemporary developments in abstract and non-representational art, such abstract expressionism.
