Enlightenment

(1) The period of intense intellectual development, from roughly the end of the sixteenth century through the end of the eighteenth, on the Continent and Britain. Enlightenment thought is characterized by optimism about human reason’s capacity to achieve knowledge. (2) In Buddhism, nirvana (enlightenment) is the goal of human existence.
