An analytic statement is true in virtue of the meaning of its terms (for instance, “all bachelors are men”) while a synthetic statement is true based on how its meaning relates to the world. The analytic-synthetic distinction has been challenged as imprecise, circular, and because no statements are immune from empirical revision.
